Strategic Research in Advanced Geotechnologies (StratAG)
The National Centre for Geocomputation (NCG) was established in 2004 through the award of a Research Professorship to its Director, Prof. Stewart Fotheringham, by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI). It has rapidly established itself as a state of the art geospatial research centre. More recently, SFI awarded the NCG €9m in research funding to initiate Strategic Research in Advanced Geotechnologies (StratAG). The Cluster is a consortium of departments drawn from NUI Maynooth, Trinity College Dublin (TCD), the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) and University College Dublin (UCD). This new research group is based around four geospatial research areas or strands; Sensors, Algorithms, Visualisation & Location Based Services(LBS).
The following are the PhD scholarships currently on offer from StratAG
- PhD Scholarship in Sensor Integration and Spatial Algorithms
- PhD Scholarship in StratAG (cross-strand)
PhD Scholarship in Sensor Integration and Spatial Algorithms
The National Centre for Geocomputation, is offering a PhD scholarship within the Strategic Research Cluster in Advanced Geotechnologies (StratAG). This scholarship links the Sensor Integration and Spatial Algorithms strands of StratAG and will be supervised by Dr. Alexei Pozdnoukhov (NCG) and Dr. Sean McLoone (EEng, NUIM).
The successful candidate will work on the development and applications of machine learning methods for the analysis and modelling of spatio-temporal data streams. This research will develop and explore the adaptive learning schemes to integrate a variety of geo-referenced data sources available from StratAG sensors, approach feature selection, monitoring network optimisation and sampling design to improve the predictive abilities of data-driven models.
Scholarship awards are valued at a tax-free EUR16,000 per year plus fees (at EU rates) for three years. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will take up the scholarship in September 2010. Applicants should have a good undergraduate degree and, preferably, a masters qualification in applied mathematics, computer science, electronic engineering, geoinformatics or other relevant discipline, or comparable postgraduate work experience.
The candidate is expected to have relevant programming skills and be motivated to complete a high quality PhD.
Closing date for applications 31st March 2010. Please complete an application form, enclose your CV and a research statement along with names and contact details of two referees who can comment on your academic suitability and email to stratag@nuim.ie. Please feel free to contact Dr Alexei Pozdnoukhov (alexei.poznoukhov@nuim.ie) for informal enquiries.
PhD Scholarship in StratAG (cross-strand)
There is a PhD scholarship available with the National Centre for Geocomputation (NCG) at NUI Maynooth. It is intended that this research works across two or more of the strands of the Strategic Research Programme in Advanced Geotechnologies (StratAG), for example on 'Complexity in Spatial Systems' or 'Issues with the Use of 3D Spatial Models'. Potential applicants should look carefully at the StratAG website to see how their research interests match the various research projects which are underway.
The scholarship provides an opportunity to work in a very exciting and dynamic environment. The funding pays an annual maintenance allowance of EUR16,000 for each of the three years of research study. Fees will also be paid at the 'home' rate for EU students; international applicants may have to be able to make a major contribution to the overseas component of the fees (this is approximately EUR5,000 a year).
Applicants should have a very good first degree in disciplines such as geophysics, geography, mathematics, physics, computer science or geocomputation and preferably a Masters qualification in a related area. Applicants should send a CV plus a covering letter stating how their research interests link to the StratAG programme, to stratag@nuim.ie (please put StratAG_PhD as the email subject header). CVs should contain the names and contact details of two referees who can comment on academic ability and suitability for PhD research. Please do not send transcripts or other material at this stage.
Applications will be reviewed from 31 March 2010 onwards, and it is anticipated that the successful candidate will begin in September 2010.
